How do I correctly measure my dog's collar size (including insider tips)?

The easy way to a perfectly fitting dog collar

Anyone who wants to buy a newcollar for their dog will sooner or later ask themselves: How do I measure the correct collar size? A well-fitting dog collar is not only a beautiful accessory, but also important for safety and comfort in everyday life.

In this article, we'll explain step by step how to correctly measure your dog's neck circumference to determine the perfect collar size - without any guesswork.

1. Why you need to measure the neck circumference – not the old collar

Many dog owners grab a tape measure and measure the total length of an old collar. But this often leads to incorrect purchases! The key to the right fit is not the total length , but your dog's neck circumference —the area where the collar will be worn later.

Our handmade dog collars made of vegetable-tanned leather have multiple holes for flexible adjustment. The center hole spacing is important for choosing the right size—this is where the collar sits perfectly.

2. Measuring a dog collar – this is how it's done correctly

To accurately measure your dog's neck circumference , all you need is a flexible tape measure or a string and ruler. Here's how:

  • Measure where you want the collar to sit.
This is usually the area between the ears and the base of the shoulders.
  • Leave two fingers space under the tape measure.
This will ensure that the collar is neither too tight nor too loose.
  • Write down the measurement in centimeters.
This is the value you need to select your size.

If you don't have a tape measure handy, you can also use a piece of string, wrap it around your neck, and then measure with a ruler.

3. An example of the correct collar size

For example, if your dog has a neck circumference of 40 cm , you should choose a collar with a center hole at approximately 40 cm . Our size information always shows the starting and ending holes in centimeters. The collar itself will then cover several centimeters above and below (e.g., 36–44 cm).

This gives you flexibility – for example, if your dog has more fur in winter or loses weight in summer.

Professional tip from the dog trainer:

A well-fitting collar is much more than just a pretty accessory; it is a key element for safety and fine communication between human and dog .

The collar should sit centrally on the neck—not too close to the ears, but also not too low toward the sternum. It shouldn't choke the dog, but it shouldn't be too loose either.

The practical test :
Grab the collar with both hands and try to pull it straight up and sideways over the head.
If this doesn't work, it will sit well and the dog won't lose it even if it suddenly moves backwards.

Leather models are particularly recommended:
They adapt perfectly, are durable and skin-friendly – ideal for dogs with sensitive skin or allergies.

Always pay attention to the material, workmanship and fit so your dog feels comfortable and safe on the go.

4. Use the size chart – for the perfect dog collar

Each of our leather collars comes with a precise size chart showing all the hole spacing. Be sure to check it before purchasing. This way, you'll find the right collar size for your dog, whether it's a Chihuahua, Beagle, or Labrador. (Special measurements apply to greyhounds – a separate post will follow.)

Insider tip from FinestPaw

If you don't have a cord, simply measure from the buckle's prong to the hole you currently use to fasten the collar, and use this measurement in centimeters to search for our size chart. Assuming the collar currently fits your dog perfectly!
